Football, Francesc Torres reminds us, “is a derivation of the ritual Celtic sport which consisted of using your feet to fight over the decapitated head of the defeated enemy.” Sport and war have had a long relationship, which is made patent in this Victory Avenue. Both one and the other, since ancient times, advance the same values of physical strength and struggle, sharing the same gestures as well, Torres explains. “Almost all sports in the Ancient Olympics, for example, practiced the necessary virtues of war in antiquity. Wrestling, jumping, races, throwing the javelin and heavy weights, and so on. It was nothing more than what the soldier did as part of his trade on the battlefield.” With this similitude, various sport and military helmets make up an avenue which could be a sport team parading with its trophy, or just as well an army returning from war.
