Pop hedonism in the MACBA Collection The big lips of Torres Monsó
A key figure in the evolution of sculpture during the second half of the twentieth century in Catalonia, Francesc Torres Monsó was best known in the context of his native Girona. Ironic and critical, he avoided the speculative logic of the art market. In the 1970s, he already questioned the idea of the work of art as unique by casting multiples with new materials such as plastic or polyester resin. Grans llavis (Big Lips) is part of a series in which the artist reproduces body parts on a large scale using synthetic moulds and materials. A realistic cut-out, the rounded and fleshy lips of Torres Monsó reinforce Pop art’s hedonism.
