Strasbourg, les célibataires, 1988

Strasbourg, the Bachelors, 1988
Photograph, 2 fotografies 49.5 x 55.2 cm c/u
‘By family, I understand all the occupants of a property. Singles, roommates, couples with or without children, of all ages, from all walks of life and all backgrounds.’ People and their relationship with the private and public space and everyday objects are the focus of Jean-Louis Schoellkopf. His photographic series depict different groups of people in French and European cities at home or at work, revealing their relationships and links. Some depict families in their living space, others show couples, still others weavers, miners or urban gangs. It is through this network of relationships, places and objects that he raises issues of citizenship, identity and belonging to a place. In the 1988 series, Strasbourg, les célibataires, he portrays single people of this central European city in a domestic or private context. His figures denote the new family order and new forms of life in a global world.
