In the Place of Public: Airport Series, 1990

During the 1980s and nineties, on several occasions Martha Rosler worked on the subject of airports, this no-place that came to define an entire way of life by the end of the century. In the Place of Public: Airport Series is a set of photographs used by Rosler in various installations and videos. The work in the MACBA Collection is a two-channel video projection showing airport terminals and landing strips. Through images of the international air traffic system and its associated spaces – terminals, tunnels, waiting rooms, billboards – and the use of texts, Rosler explores the psychology of flying, the architectural aesthetics of airports, the role of passengers and the strategies adopted by airlines. Despite their being away from urban, domestic and industrial areas, these are spaces that reflect ways of life typical of Western culture.
