Backyard Economy II (Diane Germain Mowing), 1974

Filmed in the language of a home movie and set in the backyard of a small suburban house, Backyard Economy II (Diane Germain Mowing) documents women’s domestic chores. Together with Backyard Economy I and Flower Fields, this is one of only three works by Martha Rosler filmed in Super 8. Here the artist meticulously records the movements of a woman mowing the lawn and watering the garden of her small suburban house, while questioning, as the title indicates, the productive activity behind leisure and the underlying domestic economy in the hands of women.
