Studies for Holograms (a-e), 1970

Graphic material, 5 elements: 64.5 x 64.5 cm each
Studies for Holograms (a-e) has a precedent in Nauman’s earlier 1968 work First Hologram Series: Making Faces, and in his film Pulling Mouth (1969). These works belong to his first experimentations in art, in which he used the body as formal support and material for the work of the art. First Hologram Series was produced as a hologram, using the method of holography without lenses to create a three-dimensional image of the artist on a sheet of glass; Studies for Holograms (a-e), which can be related to Nauman’s earlier works, really belongs to a series of infrared photographs that he used to produce these serigraphs, which configure an adaptable “presence” of the author in the work of art.
