Escultura doble, 1968
The plastic language of Antoni Llena and Àngel Jové takes the form of ephemeral sculptures and objects made out of basic materials. In the late 1960s, they produced several projects and exhibitions, together with Jordi Galí and Sílvia Gubern, which were shown in alternative spaces such as Petite Galerie, Lleida (1968), Jardí del Maduixer, Barcelona (1968–1969) and the Barcelona headquarters of the College of Architects of Catalonia (1970). Pioneers in Catalonia of Arte Povera and ephemeral art, Llena and Jové co-produced works, such as constructed volumes and small sculptures, in which they experimented with geometrical forms by using only fragile materials such as paper. Double Sculpture, made in 1968, is one such project. Made with kraft paper manipulated with paint and black wax, it confers a ‘soft’ quality to the geometrical solidity of a square. The conceptual and formal result of the mixture of both these artists’ universes, the work combines Llena’s ‘poor’ and ephemeral art with Jové’s immediacy and interest in assemblage in a kind of shared poetics.
