Proposta de treball "Granollers Vila Oberta", April 1975

Work proposal "Granollers Open City", April 1975

This work was one of the last interventions by Grup de Treball, which disbanded in 1975. In April of that year, the group curated the exhibition Granollers, vila oberta, which proposed an analysis of the artistic situation in Granollers, a town on the outskirts of Barcelona. Held from 4–27 April 1975 in La Clau, a small art space in Granollers, the exhibition was an attempt to show the specific situation of art in a medium-sized town, as an example of the general artistic situation in the rest of Catalonia. Together with other members of the Grup de Treball, Jordi Benito, an artist from Granollers, took an active part in the project. In the early seventies, this town from the Vallès Occidental region was central to the development of Conceptual art in Catalonia thanks to two crucial and emblematic events: the I Mostra Internacional d’Art. Homenatge a Joan Miró, 1971, and the successive editions of Concurs d’Art Jove, 1971–73. Exhibiting together for the first time were some of the most important artists who would eventually represent the generation of Arte Povera and Conceptual art in Catalonia. Grup de Treball was among them.

Faced with the challenge of organising an art exhibition in Granollers, Grup de Treball decided to call on different artists and other artistic and cultural agents in the city. Wishing to avoid the local and anecdotal, they devised the exhibition as a paradigmatic case for analysing the general artistic situation in the country. The show was structured in different fields, such as design, architecture, etc., with Jordi Benito designing the gallery guide. Every single event was filmed to create an audiovisual reading of the entire project. In tune with some of their most important actions and in accordance with their main line of interest as a collective, Grup de Treball turned the exhibition into a live debate on the artistic situation and its contradictions at such a specific historical moment. The introductory text was very explicit: ‘We are putting forward an initiative to develop a process of debate on the different approaches to artistic practice, and on the internal contradictions of this practice and the context in which it is produced.’
