Deixeu-me veure allò que no es veu. Las Meninas, 1973

Let Me See What Is Not Seen: Las Meninas, 1973
Photograph, 220 x 310 cm

Velázquez’s painting Las Meninas enables Ferran Garcia Sevilla to reflect on the dialectic between occultation and visibility. This is the question the artist poses: “This profound critique by Velázquez of the system of pictorial representation of his time means that with Las Meninas the viewer is the central character of the painting. But what is going on in this installation?” This piece is part of a series of projects that analyse images that have been voluntarily or randomly mutilated, with parts of the images covered up or hidden. They are found in the context of a broader analytical study with photographs that set out dialectical processes, such as the paired notions of movement-repose, semblance-difference and visibility-occultation. Along with this, there is a reference to undiscriminated consumption as associated with contemporary culture, which, as Garcia Sevilla observes, also impacts the art world.
