"Atlas,", 2010

Object, 2.8 x 31.3 x 47 cm
Étienne Chambaud excavates into the pages of old atlases to physically connect different countries and places in the world that have, at some point in their history, been related. The cut-out circles reveal unexpected juxtapositions between faraway territories that have been connected though colonial economic exploitation or armed conflict. Although formally presented as an open book, “Atlas,” is enclosed in a vitrine, thus negating its function as a reference to be leafed through and consulted. Instead, it becomes inaccessible.
