Installation, 1 objecte-assamblatge: 137 x 159 cm; 4 fotografies: 60 x 47 cm c/u

From 1982 to 1984, Jordi Benito created Assaigs per a l’òpera Europa as a set of performative episodes with complex staging. Romäni X took place at the Cultural Centre of the Caixa de Pensions bank in the city of Granollers, in 1982, while Nothung XI was done at Casa Brustenga in Santa Eulàlia de Ronçana, in the Vallès Oriental district, in 1983. At that time, sacrifice as katharsis was the central feature of Benito’s work, the factor unifying everything else: the presence of animals, the artist’s body, the cross, the floorplan of a church, the piano and bells, along with violence and sacrality. Benito sought to create a fusion of artistic genres and render homage to various creative reference points, such as Romanesque painting, Goya and Wagner. His performances from those years revive the Wagnerian attempt to construct a total work of art, able to enliven the past and meaning of Europe.
