Violeta Mayoral (Almería, 1988) is an artist based in Barcelona. Her point of departure is photography, understood as an autonomous space allowing to enter and exit the image, and stemming from that which is performative, sonic or sculptural as a metaphor for the gaze. Using events and the act of listening as her methodology, she is interested in understanding the regimes of meaning based on the paradigm of vision and acoustic experience. Her current research focuses on the politics of attention, listening and low-tech materialities.
She studied Communication at the University of Barcelona with a major in Semiotics from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Her work is currently represented by ethall gallery (Barcelona), where she held her first solo exhibition in 2019. She has shown her work at Fundació Antoni Tàpies and Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, Espai d'Art Contemporani de Castelló, Festival Grec (Barcelona), Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía C3A (Córdoba), Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Andalucía (Seville), Halfhouse (Barcelona), Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, La Capella (Barcelona), Centre d'Art Tecla Sala (L'Hospitalet de Llobregat), Sala de Arte Joven de Madrid and the Palmadotze (Barcelona) and L21 (Palma de Mallorca) galleries.
Mayoral has participated in various contemporary art fairs including Art-o-rama (Marseille), Luxembourg Art Fair, ARCO (Madrid) and SWAB (Barcelona), and has published work through platforms such as Lateral Addition (Philadelphia), Atmos (Montevideo) and A*DESK (Barcelona). She has taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, La Casa Encendida (Madrid) and as part of the En Residència programme (Barcelona), and has also been a long-term resident at hangar.org (Barcelona).
