Ursula Biemann studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Instituto de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, School of Visual Arts, New York, and Whitney Independent Study Program, also NYC. She currently lives and works in Zurich. Biemann uses her artistic and theoretical research to study issues such as human migration, mobility, borders, gender and the impact of technology. With a production that includes experimental videos, installations, photographs and texts, she analyses the geopolitical origins of human flows and trade in the context of globalisation to deconstruct preconceived ideas and propose a new social reality. To this end, she carries out field research and collaborates with specialists, including anthropologists, cultural theorists and architects. 

With a long exhibiting career and numerous publications and curatorial projects, her videos have been screened at many film festivals in Europe and the United States. Her video installations have been part of international exhibitions such as Manifesta, Ljubljana (2000), and the biennials of Liverpool (2004), Istanbul (2007), Sharjah (2017), Shanghai (2018), Taipei (2018) and Cuenca (2021). Her film work can be found in collections such as the Centre national d'art et culture Georges Pompidou, Rennes; Generali Foundation, Vienna; and MACBA, Barcelona.
