After studying Fine Arts at the Universitat de Barcelona, and following several stays in Cologne and Paris, Pep Agut now lives and works between Barcelona and Terrassa. Influenced by his studies in art and photography, he developed an interest in the limits and possibilities of representation and in the place of art and the artist. Employing a wide variety of techniques, he brings into play the relationship between reality and representation, between language and meaning, and between the image and the gaze. With paintings that become a story, canvases that incorporate texts, painted canvases that build into architecture and actions in which the artist becomes a conjurer, his work can be seen as a critique around the notions of creation, silence and waiting, emptiness and nothingness.
Solo exhibitions include: FRAC Languedoc-Roussillon, Montpellier (1997), Tel Aviv Museum of Art (1993), MACBA, Barcelona (2000), the Velan Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea, Turin (2002) and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2021), among others. He has participated in exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale (1993); Shirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (1996); Sydney Biennale (1998); and Art Unlimited, Basel (2004). Collections include: Museu Jaume Morera, Lleida; Fundació Vila Casas, Barcelona; and MACBA, Barcelona.
