oriol vilapuig trained at the EINA school of art in Barcelona and at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Setting out from a methodology close to the essay and analysis of tradition as what already exists, his creations feature mechanisms of appropriation, quotations, figures, texts and references to the collective imagination. With these elements he composes new logics revolving around experiences linked to the body, desire, loss, fear, language and the passing of time. vilapuig makes use of a range of techniques – from drawing to textuality, from collage to frottage, from archive to literature, from engraving to photography – and often creates large frescoes about the contemporary human condition. Throughout his work, images act as a catalyst for meaning.
His work has been exhibited at CaixaForum Barcelona and CaixaForum Madrid (2012), the Fundació Tàpies in Barcelona (2013), Tabakalera in San Sebastian (2015), Centre d’Art Tecla Sala in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (2016), the Fundació Suñol in Barcelona (2017), the Hospital de los Venerables - Sala CICUS in Seville (2018-2019), the Halhouse venue in Barcelona (2019), the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona (2020), La Virreina Centre de la Imatge in Barcelona (2022) and at the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (2023–2024). He has work at the Museu d’Art de Sabadell, the Fundació Banc Sabadell Collection, the Museo de Bellas Artes in Alava, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and the MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona.
