Born in 1959 in Murcia and settled in Barcelona, Bachiller studied art and Information Technology in various institutions in this city, such as Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya, GrisArt and Universitat La Salle, among others. He has worked in advertising and fashion photography, while pursuing his own photography as an artist. In his series, he intertwines photography with anthropology and sociology. From 1986 to 2000, he put up a number of public photography sets offering people the chance to take self-portraits. With any type of backdrop, a stool, two flashes, a tripod and a camera, anyone could take a photograph using the automatic knob. Made before digital photography and the era of selfies, he named the project Fotomatón. In this and other works, such as the still-lifes made with pictures of objects discarded in the woods by cruising or outdoor sex practitioners, Bachiller activates the notions of identity, diversity and the social construction of desire. His is a performative photography that becomes a document of the artist's travels. Bachiller forces us to look at small everyday routines and at how we conform with rules, with border spaces and forms of exclusion, and the hierarchies and power relations.
Bachiller has had solo exhibitions at Sala Transformadors, Barcelona (1988), La Grey, Association for the Promotion of Contemporary Art, Tarragona (2020 and 2024, and has participated in several European biennials, such as the Barcelona Biennial (1989 and 1990), Biennale des Jeunes Créateurs d'Europe et de la Méditerranée, Marseille (1990), and the Rencontres d'Arles (1988). His best-known publication is Fotomatón (Cesión voluntaria de identidad) (2014). He has taken part in curatorial discussions at photography festivals such as SCAN, Tarragona, and Visa pour l'Image, Perpignan. His work is included in the MACBA Collection.
