With a degree in Fine Arts from the Universitat de Barcelona, Julia Montilla works in a variety of media to analyse the role of the image and the visual construction of everyday life. Using video, installations, photography, sculpture, slide shows, etc., she is especially interested in the phenomenon of religious ecstasy and fascination, as well as the stereotypes of happiness and the social conventions of affection and sentimentality, together with the denunciation of unemployment and the precariousness of the labour market. In addition to an analysis of the codes for the construction of the gaze in contemporary societies, her work invariably embraces an element of social critique. Since the late nineties, she has exhibited in spaces such as the Capella of the Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu, Barcelona (1999); Fundació ”la Caixa”, Lleida (2003); Centro Cultural Matadero, Huesca ( 2009); Espai 13, Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (2013); and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, León (2015).
