José Luis Aparicio Ferrera (Cuba, 1994) is an independent film-maker and curator. He directed the fictional short films “Tundra” (2021) and “El Secadero” (2019), as well as the mid-length documentary “Sueños al pairo” (2020). His films have been selected for festivals including Sundance, Locarno, Raindance, Miami and BAFICI. “Tundra” won prizes at Fantaspoa, New Jersey International Film Festival, NYC Independent Film Festival and Seattle Latino Film Festival. In 2022 he was invited to the Locarno Open Doors programme and won one of the Prince Claus Seed Awards. He is currently working on his first feature film, “El mar”, a project selected for a Spanish Film Academy Residency. As part of documenta fifteen in Kassel, he curated “Tierra sin imágenes”, the biggest retrospective of Cuban independent film organised to date. He currently works as art director of the INSTAR film festival and co-edits the annual film review Fantasma Material.
