Joaquim Chancho began his training at the Escola del Treball, Reus, and later at the Escola Superior de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi, Barcelona, where he became Professor of Painting. In 1978, the school was transformed into the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona. Active since the 1970s, Chancho has developed a pictorial and graphic body of work of great unity and is a key figure in contemporary Catalan painting. Although his early work was close to figuration and matter paintings, after a stay in Paris in 1970 he became a practitioner of geometrical abstraction and Minimalism, creating a series of lineal transformations and successive sequences that incorporate signs and calligraphic elements. Since then, Chancho’s production has been formulated on a research into minimal elements such as signs, lines and colour. His large-format compositions are made up of controlled, yet asymmetrical brushstrokes, forming pictorial and graphic grids that, through a dialogue between the horizontal and vertical lines, suggest rhythm and action. During his long career, Chancho has had numerous solo exhibitions, such as Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona (1999); Centro de Arte Caja Burgos (2004); Centre d‘Art Tecla Sala, l’Hospitalet del Llobregat (2005 and 2014); Museu de Valls (2013); and Museu d’Art Modern de la Diputació de Tarragona (2013). His work is included in collections such as Col·lecció d’Art Contemporani Fundació “la Caixa”, Barcelona; Fundació Vila Casas; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid; Museu de Valls; Museu d’Art Modern, Tarragona; and MACBA, Barcelona.
