Helena Almeida (Lisbon 1934), studied Painting in the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where she currently lives and works. Her work did not become well-known until relatively recently, at the end of the seventies, because of the political and cultural seclusion of the country during the Salazar dictatorship, and the indifference toward contemporary art found in a country "absorbed in its colonial past". Almeida picks up on the conceptualist tradition that combines photography, painting, drawing and performance in an artistic practice that centres on self-representation.
