Ferran Garcia Sevilla lives and works in Barcelona. After studying History, Fine Arts and Philosophy, he became interested in the ideas of science theorists and philosophers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, and played an important part in the first generation of Catalan Conceptual artists. With experimental works addressing political critique and focusing on the limits of the image and its representation, Garcia Sevilla explored performance, cinema, photography, body art and textuality. Like other artists of his generation, at the end of the seventies he turned to a pictorial practice, to which he applied a wide theoretical and experiential background resulting from his readings and travels, as well as his knowledge of various philosophical systems. His pictorial language integrates concepts from physics, cosmology, mysticism and the history of knowledge. While his first paintings, with gestural inscriptions on impastoed backgrounds, referred to Informalism, he later abandoned textures to focus on large coloured surfaces on which he builds his own iconography.
Garcia Sevilla has exhibited in numerous institutions and museums. In the eighties he became consolidated in the international scene, along with other artists such as Juan Muñoz, Cristina Iglesias, José María Sicilia and Miquel Barceló, exhibiting in France, England, Ireland and Japan. He participated in the biennials of Paris (1977), Venice (1986) and Sâo Paulo (1996), and in the Kassel Documenta (1987). His solo exhibitions include those at MACBA, Barcelona (1996), IVAM, Valencia (1998), Malmö Konsthall (1998), the Fondation Cartier, Paris (1999), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2001) and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2010). Collections include: Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid; Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid; Fundaçâo Museu de Serralves, Porto; Les Abbatoirs FRAC Midi Pyrénées, Toulouse; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and MACBA, Barcelona, among others.
