Born in Cuzco in 1985, Daniela Ortiz settled in Barcelona in 2007. In 2020, she returned to Peru, following threats and xenophobic attacks posted on the social networks. Her work embraces murals, installations, actions and social and political activism. She creates visual narratives around concepts such as nationality, social class and gender, in order to critically analyse the colonial power of capitalism and patriarchy. Often the result of previous research, in her work she dissects the European migration control system and the institutional mechanisms that exercise violence against migrant and racialised populations. Ortiz also focuses on the exploitation of domestic workers by the Peruvian upper class. To move away from Eurocentric conceptual aesthetics, she incorporates the manual element by making ceramics, drawings and books for children.
Individual exhibitions include the Fundació Suñol, Barcelona (2010), Espai 13, Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (2011), Zona Maco Sur, Mexico (2013), Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (2016), Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, England (2017), La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona (2019), Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne (2021) and Kunstenfestivaldesarts (KFDA), Brussels (2022). Her work is in collections such as the Centre national des arts plastiques, France; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Museo MALI, Peru; FRAC Pays de la Loire, France; and MACBA, Barcelona.
