Published between 1965 and 1971, ASPEN. The Multimedia Magazine in a Box was the initiative of American publisher Phyllis Johnson. Described by its editors as the ‘first three-dimensional and multimedia magazine’, its ten issues were published sporadically. Each appeared in a different box or folder filled with materials in a variety of formats, including booklets, postcards, flexidisks, posters and super-8 movies. Its editors, designers and authors included many pioneering figures of North American and European contemporary art.

The orientation of the publication changed with its third issue, from reflecting the high-society life of the Aspen ski resort in Colorado, to becoming a showcase for the main artistic movements of the time.
