A pioneer of Action art in Central America, Aníbal López stood out for his extreme actions and disruptive urban interventions. In such performative practices, he managed to involve the viewer in the social and political tensions of his native context. His work moves between the Conceptual and Minimal art of the sixties and seventies, and the revolutionary ethics of Latin American guerrillas. His actions, often located on the edge of the law, expose the falsity and nihilism of social conventions and political symbology, while denouncing the militarisation of his country and the enforced ethnicity. Since the late 1990s, he signed many of his artistic actions as A-1 53167, the number of his national identity document, as an active critique of the way in which information codes have ended up usurping identity  His solo exhibitions include the Museo de Arte Moderno, Guatemala (1999), Centro Cultural de España, San José de Costa Rica (2003), Galleria Civica di Arte Contemporanea. Trento (2006), Centro Cultural de España, Guatemala (2011) and Associazione Prometeo per l’Arte Contemporanea, Lucca, Italy (2002, 2003, 2012). He participated in international collective exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale (2001), where he was awarded the Golden Lion, Prague Biennale (2003), Porto Alegre (2007), Pontevedra (2010) and Documenta, Kassel (2012).
