Tania Safura Adam: Black Solidarity Communities

Open PEI seminar
Song for Many Movements: Scenes of Collective Creation
in progress

In the particular story of Iberian Blackness, from slavery until the present day, the Black subject has always been violated, relegated to the margins, designated as half-human; situated at the border between human and object, or human and animal. The reaction to this incessant aggression on Black bodies has been the creation of communities of solidarity and protection to withstand the hostility; informal, sometimes unpredictable spaces, that often challenge the status quo and reinforce Black agency; invisible communities and a lineage of marronage that has been cyclical, repetitive and non-monotonous throughout the centuries. In this session, through experimenting with temporal gaps and ruptures, we will delve into different types of communities of Black solidarity that have arisen in Spain from modern times to the present day.

This event is presented as part of Song for Many Movements, an ephemeral experiment in which the ground floor of MACBA becomes a stage for encounters, conversations and shared listening. Curated by María Berríos and Sabel Gavaldon.

Tania Safura Adam is a journalist, curator and researcher. She is the founder of Radio Africa, a cultural platform for critical thinking and dissemination of black arts and cultures. Her work explores black diasporas, migrations and African music. Through multidisciplinary practice, she injects alternative narratives about the African continent and the heterogeneity of blackness in the collective imaginary, with the ultimate goal of answering the questions and difficulties that emerge from how black cultures and people fit socially in Spain and the rest of Europe. She is currently leading the research project “España Negra. Viaje hacia la negritud en el espacio-tiempo” (“Black Spain. Journey towards blackness in space-time”). Since 2018, she has been leading the Iberian Black Studies research group at MNCARS.
