Ready to Rebel
Ready to Rebel is a performance that uses yoga as an example and a catalyst to explore the contradictions of the counterculture and of Zen practices within today’s neoliberal paradigm.
While performativity needs repetition in order to consolidate the norm or conventions, there will always be the slight hope of error and bad copies as a possible form of resistance. Failure and error can also become tools for counteracting the use of yoga and other spiritual practices to boost productivity, or to sabotage their exploitation by the worlds of fitness and beauty.
Ariadna Guiteras is a visual artist who won the research grant in the 2014 Sala d’Art Jove programme with her project Zen Fascist, which includes this performance.
This performance is part of the programme PICA I FUIG! of the Sala d’Art Jove de la Generalitat de Catalunya, and is supported by MACBA under a collaboration agreement between the two institutions.

Ariadna Guiteras graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and has a Masters in Artistic Production and Research from the same university. Her artistic practice uses performance, text, drawing and installation to investigate the limits of human and non-human bodies and their relationships. Guiteras is interested in the Renaissance concept of the ‘porous body’, a medical theory that sees skin as a porous boundary, easily pierced and difficult to protect. A term that, in Guiteras’ work, alludes to bodies as vulnerable and open materials, constantly relating either to other bodies, or to the physical, telematic or ideological environment. In addition, she also explores the body in relation to gestation and maternity, to queer notions and to other concepts such as the links with the belly, the embrace and the body as home-shelter.
Solo exhibitions include Chalton Gallery, London (2016) and Sala Muncunill, Terrassa (2017). Her performances have been held in spaces and festivals such as Second Home, Berlin (2010), Nau Estruch, Sabadell (2013), MACBA, Barcelona (2014), Arts Santa Mònica and Fabra i Coats, Barcelona (2016), Museu de la Pell, Vic (2017), CentroCentro, Madrid (2018), CA2M, Móstoles (2019), La Capella, Barcelona (2020) and Kosmopolis Centre de Cultura Contemporània, Barcelona (2023). Her work is included in the MACBA Collection.
