Photographers on the Periphery

Round table with Arnau Bach, Gregori Civera, Carmen Secanella and Mónica Rosselló
Gilbert Fastenaekens / Brigitte Van Minnenbruggen, "Besos. Territorio ampliado", 2023

Photographers Arnau Bach, Gregori Civera, Carmen Secanella and Mónica Roselló will be presenting work dealing with questions about urban peripheries. The session is a change to discuss the concept of periphery, not only as a geographical space, but also as a social condition. Presented and moderated by Lourdes Delgado.

The territories traditionally excluded from the dominant representation of the city are also the most socially disadvantaged. How can this exclusion and its historical development be represented without idealising or victimising it? The right to the city also has to do with the issues of visual representation and the image, though the power relations implicit in the use of the camera are always open to debate.

Carmen Secanella and Gregori Civera are taking part in the current edition of the photographic project organised under the Pla de Barris (a neighbourhood improvement plan), exhibited at MACBA under the title Unknown City Beneath the Mist: New Images from Barcelona’s Peripheries, while Mónica Roselló took part in the previous edition. Arnau Bach is co-author of the book Linde, created in the Nou Barris neighbourhood. This round table is a chance to present their respective projects and to open up a debate on the questions posed today by the very concept of periphery, which expresses not just a geography but also a social condition.
