Musée d’Art Ancien, Département d’Art Moderne. Rethinking cultural organizations in the new cultural economy

Nancy Spero "Sheela-Na-Gig at Home", 1996

Seminar

Directed by George Yúdice with the participation of Maurizio Lazzarato, Ana Carla Fonseca Reis, Gerardo Mosquera and Stephen Wright.

Beginning with an analysis of the factors that make up the new “cultural economy,” which is defined by the displacement of industrial production toward the immaterialization of goods and services as a base for economic growth, this seminal will critically reflect on the effects of “this new stage of capitalist growth.”

It will analyze its presence in the privatization of culture in the cultural and creative industries, its penetration in urban regeneration, in work, businesses, intellectual property, and art. It will examine how it affects this cultural economy in the public sphere and in what manner the concept of public service is evolving.

George Yúdice is the director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University.

This seminar is part of the open Independent Studies Program (PEI).

This activity is a part of the Transform project and has been funded by the European Community.
