MURMURS X: Marc Vives, SSSSS

As part of Murmurs, a programme that deals with ephemeral practices, journeys and forms of memory that circulate outside regular institutional narratives, Marc Vives presents SSSSS, a performance that springs from exploration begun in 2018 on the basis of a gesture as everyday as it is strange: swimming from La Barceloneta to a point level with the mountain of Montjuïc to try to communicate with it.

Since then, this initiative has developed into a set of actions, videos, drawings, photographs and sound pieces in which the body, the voice and the landscape become media for mutual resonance.

Taking as a starting point the video SSSSS (2020), made along the Costa Brava with a head-mounted camera, Vives constructs a fragmentary, liquid experience of the territory involving its coastal geography, tourist architecture and affective memory of the Mediterranean landscape. The voice appears here as sculptural, relational matter: a flow able to infiltrate spaces, architectures and bodies to alter the way they are organised and perceived. In a dialogue with the spirit of Murmurs, this piece triggers an unstable listening to our surroundings and suggests thinking of landscape not as a passive backdrop, but as a living agent with historic, political and sensory tensions running through it.

Marc Vives

Barcelona, 1978

Marc Vives (Barcelona, 1978) is an artist, performer, educator and cultural producer. His practice moves between visual and performing arts, working with voice, body and landscape as materials capable of altering established forms of relation and perception. Through singing, swimming, listening and collective action, he develops projects in which the voice acquires a sculptural and relational dimension, infiltrating architectures, spaces and bodies.

Trained in Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and currently a PhD candidate in Humanities at the University of Castilla–La Mancha, between 2002 and 2012 he was part of the duo Bestué-Vives, whose work has been presented in institutions and collections such as MACBA, MNCARS and the Venice Biennale. Since then, he has developed a hybrid practice combining performance, pedagogy, research and cultural production. He has promoted independent projects such as YProductions, Hamaca, Por La Vena and Radiobucket, and has collaborated with institutions including Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Hangar and L’Estruch, where he directed the performance and visual arts residency programme between 2014 and 2017. Since 2013 he has been co-director of GRAF.cat.
