Mobile Radio Workshop with the Ràdio Web MACBA Working Group
finished
This workshop aims to blend the dynamics of collective learning and thinking by doing of the Radio Web MACBA Working Group with the a life-long research and work of Mobile Radio, a collective of activists and transmission artists formed by Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann.
At this crossroads of practices and ways of working, radio represents a fertile ground for listening, experimentation and community experience. As the artists see it, the potential of electromagnetic waves as a subject matter and a new dimension of artistic expression give rise to certain notions –radio art, transmission art…– together with a vast array of practices that can be deployed together.

Mobile Radio is the radio art duo of Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann. As co-founders of Resonance FM in London and the international Radia network, they began the itinerant Mobile Radio project in 2005 which has been continuously involved in the production of milestones in their field for the past two decades. They were invited to present a 100-day radio station as an artwork at the 30th São Paulo Biennial in 2012, created a 24-hour two-frequency radio art festival in Stockholm in 2013, co-curated the international radio art festival Radio Revolten in Halle (Saale) in 2016, produced 41 radio shows for documenta 14 in 2017, and were the artistic directors of the 100-day broadcast project Radio Art Zone as part of the European Capital of Culture Esch in 2022. Between them, they have made radio art productions for more than 60 stations around the world, presented sound installations, a short film, and edited two books on radio art, the latest of which is ”Radio Art Zone” (Hatje Cantz, 2023).
