Living and creating during an era of mass death, homophobia, and racist xenophobia, Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ work stages the entanglements between queer brown love and loss. What does it mean to love Gonzalez-Torres’ work and in what ways do we experience queer love in the encounter with it? Delivered during another era of global death and xenophobic white nationalisms, this talk offers a lyric meditation on the life and work of Felix Gonzalez-Torres wherein love is joined to the inevitability of loss, just as love is a resource for surviving (after) loss.

Joshua Chambers-Letson is Professor of Performance Studies and Asian American Studies at Northwestern University. He has published widely on contemporary art and performance, critical race theory and queer of colour critique, and is the author of After the Party: A Manifesto for Queer of Color Life (NYU Press, 2018) and A Race So Different: Law and Performance in Asian America (NYU Press, 2013). With Tavia Nyong’o he is the editor of José Esteban Muñoz’s posthumous The Sense of Brown (Duke University Press, 2020) and along with Nyong’o and Ann Pellegrini he is a series co-editor of the Sexual Cultures series at NYU Press.
