Games with Seeds, Plants and Flowers from the Golan Heights with Shada Safadi
In this workshop, Shada Safadi, Palestinian artist in residence at TEJA, invites us to activate two pieces that are in fact two games: Memory of Wild Plants and Seed Dominoes allow us to talk about plants and seeds from the Golan Heights region that have been categorised as weeds. This means they are left out of the productive circuit and the properties, uses and traditions associated with them have been lost.
The games Memory of Wild Plants and Seed Dominoes invite participants to rediscover and reconnect through play with the native wild plants of Palestine.
Each game is inspired by botanical illustrations that were circulated during the colonial campaign to control weeds in 1940 in Palestine. These “weeds” are plants that at that time were classified as harmful and attacked by industrial agriculture, but which hold profound ancestral, medicinal and ecological knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation through everyday use and oral narrative. By relating the seeds to their plants, the names to their images and the patterns with memories, the games help to restore a more intimate, poetic relationship with local flora.
