Friends visit to the MACBA conservation and restoration workshop
Accompanied by the Conservation and Restoration team, we will discover the processes and criteria that ensure the conservation of the works in the MACBA Collection.
How are contemporary works of art conserved? What materials are the most fragile? How do we restore a piece that includes unusual materials? On this visit to the MACBA conservation and restoration workshop, we will discover an essential part of the life of the museum. With Silvia Noguer, head of Conservation and Restoration, we will explore the different strategies for preserving works created with unusual or ephemeral materials, from work on paper to multimedia installations.
We will find out about the criteria that guide the processes of preventive conservation and restoration of contemporary art works, and discuss the limits of intervention on pieces intended by the artist to become obsolete or to deteriorate as part of the creative process. This activity will enable us to learn about specific cases of works in the MACBA Collection that required special interventions, as well as the dilemmas faced by the team in making sure work is interpreted properly over time. A unique chance to discover the museum from an expert, technical point of view.

MACBA Collection
The MACBA Collection focuses on the art of the period spanning the second half of the twentieth century to the present. Without ignoring the specificity of any moment, it centres on what the notion of artistic contemporaneity and its multiplicity of languages has meant during the last decades.
