Flamenco Night

El sol cuando es de noche
Constant, projecte per a un camp gitano, 1957

El sol cuando es de noche, the old soleá muttered by the Situationists, is the title of this meeting of artists: Gachós and gypsies, Catalan and Andalusian, farmers and paios, people from all walks of life who move in what is called flamenco, and move at night. We want to share space and time with them, so we can begin to understand that flamenco, perhaps, is also a place that talks, a kind of slang. If we could compare spaces to languages, architectural, topological and institutional spaces would be the official languages, and flamenco would be a slang-space, a dialect, a brotherhood, a secret language.

Through works from the MACBA Collection and audiovisual material and documents from various sources, we will aim at constructing a space and a time with performances, concerts, cante and dance. A space of initiation where our eyes can, alternatively, stay open or closed.

Pedro G. Romero (Aracena, Huelva, 1964) is an artist who has been active in numerous disciplines: sculptor, painter, performer, playwright, scriptwriter, etc., as well as literary and art critic, editor, essayist and flamenco expert. The main subject of his work is the investigation and reflection on the image as a point of resistance against time, whether historical, biological, psychological or verbal. Since 2000 he has been working on Archivo F.X. and Máquina P.H., centred on iconoclasm and flamenco respectively.

MACBA experiments with a public activity format in which the critical mechanisms of the seminar merge with the creative potential of the exhibition. The idea is to bring about hybridisations and the brimming over of both devices. THE NIGHT… is a critical-performative installation and an ephemeral exhibition. While seminars work with the critical word, THE NIGHT… explores the articulations between the poetic word, performative practice, critical discourse and audiovisual production. While exhibitions display a work in a space, highlighting its visual dimension, THE NIGHT… emphasises the temporary, performative, relational nature of contemporary artistic practice.

THE NIGHT… interrupts the biopolitical rhythms of production, restoring the time of darkness – that which Restif de la Bretonne called ‘the revolutionary reverse of the conventional day’ – as a time for gathering, debate and creation. The aim is to remove the artist and the critic from the repetitive time of capitalist production and place them in a Benjaminian time of creation and transformation. THE NIGHT… is a collision between fiesta and assembly, popular and critical culture, theatre and the academy, the public square and the museum.
