Between Words and Gestures: Ways of Being in the Museum  

Interareas and Las Cosas collective invite us to think and above all to experience other ways of being in the museum. The activity springs from questions arising from the [contra]panorama process of working on the habits, customs and protocols associated with the museum space, encouraging participants to join in with their bodies. The action sets out from the short story El lloc que espera [The Place that Awaits], written after a series of conversations with different people at MACBA to imagine, collectively, a museum in which to meet up and relax, and to complement the Ressonàncies [Resonances] routes around the museum set up by interareas [entrezones] in recent months. 

Letting oneself get carried away by a cry, a caress, a silence. Words are projected into the air, and we explore its sonority and possible meanings. How do we inhabit the museum? Who has inhabited it before? What relations have been made invisible? Accompanied by Las Cosas, we propose a relaxed setting in which to become a mass, to awaken a set of bodies, carried away by the chance relations arising at the time. By appealing to gestuality and diffuse endings, we’ll allow ourselves to generate different ways of being, other than the pre-existing codes that condition and structure exhibition venues. On this basis we’ll think about how the body, but also words, can take up a volume within the museum, in order to collectively explore other ways of sustaining ourselves.

In 2021, MACBA launched the triennial Panorama, which aimed to “deepen its collaboration and dialogue with local artists and cultural agents”. [contra]panorama, the second edition of Panorama retains the same aim but works towards it through a year-long series of interventions that take the project’s title literally, in order to question both the continuing relevance of the triennial (or biennial) format and its capacity to offer a panoramic image of the present.
