African Avant-Garde Film-Makers

Screening of Le Retour dun aventurier, Parlons grand-mère and La Grammaire de grand-mère...

Still from "Parlons grand-mère", Djibril Diop Mambéty, 1989

Cinema session devoted to three African avant-garde film-makers because of their practices and thoughts about the language of film. The activity will be presented by Elvira Dyangani Ose, director of MACBA.

In Le Retour d’un aventurier, a western set in Niger, Moustapha Alassane uses satire to question the appropriation of western narratives and values. Fifteen years after his iconic Touki Bouki, Djibril Diop Mambéty follows the shooting of Yaaba, by Idrissa Ouedraogo, showing the difficulties of filming in Burkina Faso with Parlons grand-mère, and focusing on his two particular concerns: cinema and childhood. Finally, Jean-Pierre Bekolo, in La Grammaire de grand-mère…, pays homage to Mambéty, who, with humour and ingenuity, gives us his definition of cinema from a bar counter.

Activity in collaboration with Filmoteca de Catalunya, as part of the Africa Strikes Back series, accompanying the exhibition Extreme Collision: Hand-painted Posters from Ghana, 1990s.
