Memory Is a Shattered Landscape: Independent Cuban Film Series
In A media voz [In a Whisper] (2019), Patricia Pérez and Heidi Hassan, friends and film-makers distanced by exile, exchange audiovisual letters in which they share their experiences of reinventing themselves after a forced uprooting process.
Memories of their distant country, more and more blurred, mix with the exercise of building a new identity, generating other memories. In this self-referential essay, each fragment becomes a fractal of the great affective structure.The audiovisual correspondence between two film-makers and Cuban emigrants is used to structure the dialogue in this self-ethnographic documentary. Two childhood friends approaching the age of 40 try to reconstruct themselves far from Cuba, confronting the challenges of emigration. An intimate, revealing film about friendship and exile.
