A museum outside the museum
The works leave the museum context in search of perspectives beyond the usual ones, opening up a poetic possibility within a programmed reality. A dentist’s waiting room, a bakery, a football pitch, a funeral home, a town hall…
In this way, works from the museum’s collection and archive travel across the territory as part of the celebration of MACBA’s thirtieth anniversary.
A project by the visual arts centres of Catalonia, curated by Martí Manen.
In The Joycean Society, Dora García takes as her starting point one of the most cryptic works in world literature: Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. Finally published in 1939, although partially appearing in serialised form from 1924 onwards, the writer’s last novel is one of the best literary representations of the unconscious, a circular text that imposes a never-ending interpretation. The Zurich James Joyce Foundation, founded by a group of amateur readers, has met weekly since 1986 to read Joyce’s text out loud together. In Dora García’s recording of the sessions, we see ten readers seated around a table following the Irish creator’s phonetic experimentation and inexhaustible semantic games. They laugh, clarify the historical meaning of words, link them to works of literature and celebrate the act of shared reading. The Joycean Society brings out the virtues of conversational practice, literary interpretation and the production of meaning.

A room with a fireplace and a photograph of the sea is the setting where Mabel Palacín, in collaboration with the architect Mirko Mejetta, questions our relationship with images and the world. What role do images play in the construction of the world? What does the disproportionate giant sea snail or the fragmented presence of the girl in the chair indicate? Palacín investigates the power of images to create reality and how they resist being interpreted in a fixed and stable way. Like a mysterious chamber, Paisatge interior amb marina brings to the fore the relationship between subject, image and the world. ‘In my work, I have tried to construct universes where images try out other ways of working.’ The digital age has expanded the formats through which an image can be multiplied, forcing us to reinvent the medium, to use it in a different way and to reformulate the uncertainties of the subject in a fast-changing world.

Unexpected Spaces in the Territory
Time plays an important part in Martí Anson’s work. These two photographs use a resource as basic as natural light to show the passage of time. Anson photographs the same interior twice – a domestic workplace and an office – with a clock on the wall arrested in time. There is no apparent difference between one photograph and the other: the same viewpoint and framing, the same furniture and the clock that marks the same time. We must turn to the external light seen through the window to perceive that one image has been taken in daylight and the other at night, and that the clock, although broken, is still right twice a day. With minimal resources, Anson invites us to reflect on the nature of time: while nature operates following the eternal circularity of day and night, the human calculation implied by a clock strives to perceive it as an infinite advancement.

Xavier Miserachs comprehensively documented Barcelona in the 1950s and 1960s. Considered one of the main photographers of the city, in his walks through neighbourhoods and squares he was not only interested in architecture and urban planning but also in the ways of life and the diversity of its inhabitants. Els Encants is one of his most emblematic images. It belongs to a series of black-and-white photographs taken between 1956 and 1957 at this historic flea market in Plaça de les Glòries. Miserachs revitalised the genre of documentary photography during those years, building upon a tradition that began before the Spanish Civil War. Close to Neorealism, his work captures the changes endured by the working classes in a new urban environment. With a sharp, incisive and chaotic way of looking at city life, he articulated a new sensibility diametrically opposed to official academicism, which in those days still championed the supposedly endearing and picturesque nature of photography.

In 1979, Joaquim Jordà filmed a documentary about workers in the Numax household appliance factory. For two years, they had been self-managing the factory in response to and in protest against the attempted irregular closure by the owners, two Germans who had settled in Barcelona in the 1950s. The history of resistance in the Numax factory is the history of a labour movement that, following the death of Franco, had aspired to a transformation of the political and social system but which saw its class aspirations betrayed. The documentary was made on the initiative of the Numax Workers’ Assembly. which, nearing the end of its existence, decided to invest the last 600,000 pesetas owned by the collective in recording the process that they had started together.
David Goldblatt, Warehouse Interior (Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL). Series: ‘Global Connections’), 2007/2026
Between 2007 and 2008, as part of a photographic study on Barcelona that MACBA commissioned from renowned photographers, David Goldblatt focused on the Llobregat River area to create the series Global Connections. A set of photographs that document human interventions in the landscape as well as the political decisions that make them possible. The South African photographer captured the road networks and the airport, but also the Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL), in Prat del Llobregat. as shown in this photograph, Warehouse Interior. In a globally connected world, warehouses become nodes of economic activity that affect the general economy but also the geography and local economy.

In 2003, a collective research project was launched by various Spanish cultural institutions. Under the title Disagreements: On Art, Politics and the Public Sphere in Spain, it resulted in exhibitions, publications, public debates and meetings. Organised by MACBA in Barcelona, Arteleku in Donostia and the International University of Andalusia, it aimed to trace the cultural practices, models and counter-models that did not respond to dominant structures, politics and practices that had been self-imposed since the beginning of the Transition. In this research context, on 12 March 2004, one of the promoters and coordinators of the project, Jesús Carrillo, interviewed the art critic and theorist Manel Clot, an expert on the Spanish art scene since the 1980s. Recorded in Barcelona, it is part of the series of interviews on documentary research included in the project.

The relationship between the Barcelona photographer Colita (Isabel Steva Hernández) and the poet and visual artist Joan Brossa was the result of a long-lasting friendship. Collaborators in multiple activities in Barcelona in the sixties and seventies, the photographer portrayed him on many occasions. On night outings in the city, in the poet’s studio on Carrer Balmes, at cabaret shows, the sit-in of intellectuals in Montserrat in 1970, the Festa de la Lletra in 1979 and other events, always capturing the avant-garde spirit of the poet and his environment, as well as his fascination with the magical and symbolic universe. Retrat de Joan Brossa, 1979, from 2007, is a testament to Colita’s unique ability to capture the essence of her friends. In this case, it shows us Joan Brossa presenting a poem printed on a vest.

Josep Ponsatí is known for his inflatable sculptures, monumental and ephemeral aerial structures built from linked modular forms. After a first inflatable erected in Granollers, in October 1971 he launched a second one in Cala Sant Miquel in Ibiza during the meeting of designers at the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). It was made up of 12 white, plastic modules with a slightly curved shape. Each module measured 11 x 3.5 metres, with a total length of 41 metres. Combining the fragility and modesty of poor materials with the repetitive structures of Minimalism, these inflatable sculptures also evoke the ritual and participation of all those who collaborated in the project.

The set of photographs entitled Relacions documents two series of actions performed in 1975 by Fina Miralles, a pioneer of Action art in Catalonia: some in her everyday environment and others in nature. This work is part of the second set, Relació del cos amb elements naturals, in which the artist links her body to natural elements until she reaches a fusion or symbiosis. While in other works she is planted in the earth, as if she were a tree, or covered with stones or straw, in this case she lies down in a wheat field, leaving the impression of her body, only for the stalks to immediately spring back and erase her footprint. A way of suppressing the limits between body and nature by an artist who has turned this into the central focus of her practice. Miralles’ minimal and ephemeral actions confront us, in an immediate and almost sensorial manner, with our condition as beings inserted in nature.
