Installation, Variable dimensions

The Moroccan artist Younès Rahmoun presents an installation consisting of seventy-seven lanterns grouped in ten flower-shaped groups, brought together to make a larger flower. The lanterns represent the seventy-seven branches or paths of faith in Islam. Rahmoun’s work is strongly influenced by Zen and Sufi philosophy and the role of mathematics and astronomy in the Muslim tradition.

Beyond the symbolism of the number and its connection with a specific religion, Rahmoun’s installations powerfully evoke the universal dimension of spirituality. His pieces are of great simplicity: the systematic repetition of a gesture, a word, an action or an element works as an element of meditation. Rahmoun observes the private space of his inner convictions and seeks to bring it into physical being in the purest possible way, sometimes only using light, space and silence.
