2 part piece 221, 1975
Installation,
138 x 138 x 46 cm
In the sixties, Sol LeWitt was central to the radical Conceptual art movement that emerged as a reaction to American Abstract Expressionism. Minimalist in form, many of his works are studies in geometry and were executed by other people following the artist’s instructions. He believed that, in art, it is not only the final result that is relevant, but the entire production process. 2 Part Piece 221 demonstrates some of the forms based on the figure of the cube or minimum unit. In this type of structure, LeWitt looked for a pattern or a sequential relationship for the square, something similar to a system.
