Pierre Bismuth was born in Paris in 1963 and lives and works between New York and Brussels. He is interested in the systems through which we perceive reality, and his works often subvert the usual accepted codes of perception. Film is one of the sources that he uses in his work, and he also draws on linguistic and textual references as well as images and elements from the cultural industry and market. He creates highly effective gestures, often using humour, to disrupt the ordinary established codes through which we interpret images. Bismuth often uses trickery and crossed codes to challenge the certainty with which our perceptual system decodes our environment.
