Open Systems is a course that offers teachers the opportunity to discover and examine the hybridisation and convergence that exist between artistic and scientific practices. Two forms of knowledge that cannot be measured solely in terms of success or failure, but which should be understood as analytical and research activities dealing with the unknown.

The course is structured in a series of sessions opening up a space in which to explore the points of connection between artistic creativity and scientific experimentation through discussion and dialogue between professionals from different fields. The face-to-face sessions will be complemented by group discussions exploring the existing synergy between scientific and artistic practices.

With the participation of Josep Perelló, associate professor at the Department of Fundamental Physics at the Universitat de Barcelona.

18 NOVEMBER
Scientific creativity
Session organised in two parts: the first will be an introduction and comment on the global content of Open Systems, the working methodology and the virtual tools used during the course; the second part will examine how links and synergies have been created between science and contemporary artistic practice from the point of view of scientific investigation.

Led by Josep Perelló, aggregate professor at the Department of Fundamental Physics of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB).

16 DECEMBER
Systems of knowledge
This session deals in the systems of knowledge that are currently of great interest to the fields of art and science. With the help of our two guest speakers, we will examine this interest at first hand. Participants will have the opportunity to open the debate from the questions arisen during the session.

Led by the artist Erick Beltrán, whose work is included in the MACBA Collection, and Pere Castells, who hold a degree in Chemical Sciences in the speciality of Organic Chemistry from the UB and is responsible for the project Bullipèdia organised by the Fundació El Bulli and the UB.

20 JANUARY
Artistic experimentation
Session centred on art and the direct experiences of the participants, who will come into contact with the works in the MACBA Collection. The session will take place in the exhibition galleries, and will open, generate and put forward questions on contemporary artworks and their creational processes.

Led by Jordi Ferreiro, artist-educator, and Yolanda Jolis, art historian and coordinator of the Department of Education and Mediation at MACBA.

17 FEBRUARY
The man-machine in art and science
Session on the subject of the man-machine. The first part will analyse the relation between technology and contemporary art. By commenting on different works of art, we will analyse how the new technologies have acquired great potential in contemporary art since the mid-twentieth century. More practical, the second part will teach us to programme robots in order to examine robotics as a tool for promoting creativity, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (C-STEM), and encourage the values of team work, innovation and the culture of effort.

Led by Rocío Lara, member of Ro-Botica, and Yolanda Jolis, art historian and coordinator of the Department of Education and Mediation at MACBA.

17 MARCH
Open Systems. ‘Work in progress’
Working session for discussing the working groups created during the course and defining the projects that have to be presented during the last session of the course.

Led by Josep Perelló, aggregate professor at the Department of Fundamental Physics of the UB, and Yolanda Jolis, art historian and coordinator of the Department of Education and Mediation at MACBA.

28 APRIL
Open Systems projects
The last session will be dedicated to the exhibition of the final projects by each working group. At the end there will be an open space for debate between all the participants and the general public.
