Crisis - Elections, 1978
Media installation, Variable dimensions
The first Spanish legislative elections, held in June 1977, are the basis for the work of Francesc Abad and Ramon Santos, who question the representative capacity of that democracy from the moment of its gestation. Images of Francoist politicians in decline are projected alongside others of polling stations, political graffiti on the streets and the new democratic leaders. The piece also features a recording of the speeches and music from the first democratic campaign, along with the pop music of the time.
Forty-one years after the last general elections held during the Second Republic, the young Spanish democracy already showed some of its weaknesses, such as the new role of the media in social communication and the construction of a political discourse. Incorporating documentary, textual, audio and visual material was part of the new artistic languages. A committed, militant art analysed the paradoxes inherent in the exercise of freedom.
