Robert Whitman. Playback

It is difficult for us to understand Whitman’s works today because of the ephemeral nature of most of the materials used by the artist. The Playback project, an initiative of New York’s Dia Art Foundation, enjoyed close cooperation with the artist to restore and reconstruct his works. Both the exhibition and the book are products of this six-year long project which became archeological as it attempted to rehabilitate some aged movies and technologically obsolete equipment in order to adapt them to current technological needs.

For the MACBA exhibition, we have published a separata of curator Lynne Cook’s essay in both Catalan and Spanish. The publication includes a DVD of commentated selections of Whitman’s video creations such as The American Moon, Flower, and Prune Flat, as well as an interview with the Artist.
